Most of the people feel uncomfortable or afraid during dental treatment. Painless dentistry is one of the best option for patients who have fear for dental procedures needle have severe gagging problem have very sensitive teeth or have difficulty of numbers after local anesthesia.
Painless dentistry provides anxiety free & pain free dentistry as patients are in deeply relaxed. State though fully responsive. Painless dentistry offers an opportunity to perform multiple or lengthy dental procedures in one visit, minimizing the number of visit a patient has to make & ultimately reducing the anxiety which patients feel prior to each dental visit.
Four different methods are used in Painless Dentistry
Orally Administered Sedation
Orally administered sedation also known as oral sedative. It is administered by taking liquid or pills. The medication can be given to the patient night before a dental procedure or 30 minutes to an hour immediately before the dental appointment depending on the anxiety.
Patients all body functions remain normal & patient can breathe on their own. Some degree of amnesia is common. The patient will often fall asleep. The disadvantages of oral sedative is that the level of sedation for each person is unpredictable.
Intravenous sedation like oral sedatives also known as “Deep conscious sedation”. Usually, it is used by dentist & Oral surgeons who have specialized training & special certificate by the state Board of dentistry.
By intravenous sedation, medications are administrated directly into patients blood stream. The advantage of IV sedation is that if some one is not sedated enough, administration of more medication is possible & effects are instantaneous.
Drugs given by IV route are more effective than drugs given by oral route. There is more profound amnesia associated with sedation technique. In this sedation patient remain awake & able to respond to commands.
Nitrous Oxide gas sedation
Nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) include state of relaxation. To eliminate pain. One could administrate local anesthesia in combination with nitrous oxide gas. This is most frequently used sedation method in dentistry.
In this state person is able to breathe & all body functions remain normal also the patient will often fall a sleep & experienced some degree of amnesia about whatever happened during Painless Dental Treatment appointment. This method of sedation is best for uncooperative child patient.
Under general anesthesia patients are completely fall asleep during surgery. General anesthesia makes patient pain free, immobile, unaware about things happening around them for time spent under anesthesia. As under G.A patients are in unconscious state so no need to give local anesthesia for pain relief.
